In Motherless Daughters-The Legacy of Loss.Is a book about young women and older women who lost their mothers early on in their childhood and how they dealt with their mother's absence in different aspects and times of their lives. Hope Edelman is the main woman that talks about all the problems that she went through in her whole life and how they were even harder to deal with without her mother.Hope Edelman's mother died at the age of 42 on July 12, 1981 when Hope had just turned 17 years old.She has a much harder time than a young woman normally would in trying to fit in with all of the other young women; who had letters to receive from their mothers, and letters to write back and being able to call and talk to their mothers on the phone. She joined a sorority to try to start opening up.In this group, however, these young women would talk about different things that they had done that their mothers didn't know about this is a very sensitive topic however for the interest to have a mother with the girls began to pry, and she finally explained that she didn't have a mother it made it even harder for her to open up to people. While in college she met other girls who also experienced traumatic losses involving their father. She realized that although a father's disappearance from a child's life, is horrible and tragic, a mother's disappearance from a daughter's life is even more so. Hope goes through her whole life trying to figure out how to deal with the many problems that she shall face as not only a young woman, but a grown woman, then a wife and also a mother.
